Husband, father, and champion ultra runner Duncan Callahan brings 6 years of high-level ultra performance and experience to the trails. Last year, (Spring 2011) Callahan launched his successful online coaching business ‘Strategic Endurance,’ to help others in their pursuit of ‘ultra-excellence’. Callahan’s passion is now squarely centered on helping others reach their long-term goals on the trails and in the mountains.
Duncan began racing ultras in 2007, and came onto the scene with a win at the 2008 Leadville Trail 100. It was Callahan’s first 100-mile victory at Leadville that gave him the confidence in pursuing ultra-running and coaching at a high level. Callahan’s 2009 race season consisted of 7 podium finishes in 7 ultra events, including a 2nd place finish at the Rocky Raccoon 50 mile with a PR of 6:11, a victory and course record at the 2009 Moab 100, a 3rd place effort at the 2009 Leadville Trail 100, and a course record performance at the Grand Teton 50 mile. Pushing into 2010, Callahan battled back from an early season slump to set a course record of 6 hours 50 minutes in route to winning the Leadville Silver Rush 50 mile in July. He followed that up with a strong victory over a deep field at the 2010 Leadville 100, finishing 1st with a time of 17:43. 2 weeks after this performance, Callahan placed 2nd at the Grand Teton 100 with a time of 19 hours and 3 minutes.
Callahan began ‘Strategic Endurance Coaching‘ in the spring of 2011 while winning both the Spring Desert Ultra 50 mile and the Sun Mountain 50 mile. Duncan and his wife Annie welcomed the arrival of their first beautiful child (Daughter Jordan Elizabeth) in July. Exciting times indeed! Other 2011 results included an 8th place showing at the Hardrock 100 and a 9th place showing at Callahan’s 5th consecutive Leadville Trail 100.
Throughout 2012, Callahan pushed the limits of his performance with victories at the Spring Desert Ultra 50 mile and Grand Mesa 50 mile. In May, Duncan rallied to an 11th place finish in the inaugural Ultra Trail Mt Fuji in Japan, while learning a lot in his first international competition. In September 2012, Duncan steadily moved up the ranks with a super consistent effort to finish in 5th place overall with a time of 22:36 at the Steamboat 100, a race which included the largest prize purse in Ultra-running history.
